Dallas Road, plein air, oil on panel, 6x6in

The sky is the real character in many of my paintings. This morning it was ablaze on the horizon through a lacy silhouette of tree branches. This is Dallas Road near Menzies Street looking towards the rest area parking.
This painting is for sale on an eBay auction. Click here to check it out.

Bob in the Garden

It was an Al Frescoes Friday. We went out to paint in Bob Langford's garden. There were Dalias, tomatoes, and koi fish. I couldn't decide what to paint so I painted Bob while he sketched. The weather was constantly changing. First gray and threatening rain. Then sun. Then as soon as we finished our outing it poured cats and dogs.
I love the flowers. I managed to keep the colors really bright by only using pure tube colors and not mixing in any secondaries or complimentary.

Selkirk Station, acrylic 8x10

Here's this morning's attempt. I went painting as a guest of the sketch club.  It was a  hot sunny morning. I did this little painting over a burnt sienna ground. I think it gave it a nice warmth to go with the day's temperature.

Parliament, acrylic 8x10

A scorching day on the causeway. I did this little painting just as the day was moving into dusk. I think more contrast would be interesting but I like the perspective. I'll do it again.

Dallas Road Scene acrylic 8x10

Today I decided on knife painting and felt the long grasses would lend themselves to this technique.

Holland Point Windy Day

It was such a windy morning. It feels like late summer. That's the Olympcs across the water.

Holland Point Morning, 8x10, acrylic on canvas

I struggled with the sky. Although I saw it as having a lot of blue and not much else I felt it made the painting less harmonious than a more subdued sky.

Anderson Hill Park, 16X20, acrylic on canvas

SOLD
It was a much nicer day today and many Alfrescoes showed up for the paint out. They make great subjects! Tat's Delia Samson and John Patric Howe. Both accomplished Victoria artists.
I had trouble with everything about this painting up to the last few minutes then I decided to abandon all reason and just finish it the best I could. So I hurriedly added some quick darks and lights for contrast and it strengthened the design.

Anderson Hill, 8x10, acrylic on canvas

I was ready for today's Alfrescoe paint out. I prepared all my gear before turning in last night. Even premixed some nice grays that could be useful today.
This morning it was raining. No matter, a real artist wouldn't let a little rain stop them. Off I went to Anderson Hill.
I was the first one there. I got first dibs on a spot. I started painting. It rained. I was the only one there. I felt smug, but a little lonely. After a while another Alfrescoe "Greg" showed up. He informed me that it was Thursday and he was just checking out the spot for tomorrows painting.
Wrong day. What will I be like in 10 years.
Tomorrow I think I'll paint the Gary Oaks near the park's gateway.

June Sky in Victoria

This morning I was inspired by the gorgeous June sky. So instead of heading straight for the causeway I went to the seaside with my easel.

Gathering kelp, 30X40 acrylic

I did this painting a few weeks ago and didn't like the left side and then gessoed over it. I did photograph it and sent it to a fellow artist but before she responded the painting was primed over.

While walking on the beach I passed these women gathering kelp and thought it would make a great painting.

I'll paint it again.

Place of Whales, oil on canvas 8x8

We went out with a guide to paint here. Here the Tsartlip people harvested oysters and gathered for social and spiritual events. The place was given its name because the whales would sometimes follow the salmon here. It was sunny one minute, then hail, then rain. It was beautiful. I felt the spirit of the land and I felt truly honored to be a guest of these people.

Alfresco Jerry Painting

sold
I did this little 6x6 oil on wood panel this morning with the Al Frescoes. It was cold and threatening rain, and there was a bit of whimpering but no one left early. I like to paint figures where ever possible and the al frescoes is a perfect opportunity for that as at least some of the artists will sit still for a few minutes to allow for a painting.
I like the freshness of this little painting.
