1203 Montreal Skyscape (Hochelaga) Work in progress

I've been working on this egg tempera piece the past two days. It's coming around. I will work on it more tomorrow. I might finish it with oil glazes. Will see. Although oil glazes can really bring up a piece and give it amazing depth the shellac coat on egg tempera gives it a smooth enamel like finish.

1155 Winter Shadows, 24x36, Oil (Work in progress)

I've been working on a larger piece this week. It's in oils because I "oil primed" my larger canvases this last summer and now it restricts what medium I can put on top of it. (lesson learned!) So it's rather slow going waiting days for the layers to dry in between. At this stage I think I will scoop up the colours on my pallet and store them until the layers are dry enough to glaze and scumble. And do corrections and details.

1127 The Admirer, Still Life with Figurines, 8x10 oil on board

bid
I am trying out a new technique. It's based on the Flemish technique. First you do an underpainting in monotone and then you glaze over top.  I really enjoyed doing the underpainting. I found it very relaxing. But so far I'm not pleased with the glazing. Too many streaks. I suspect that it's because I only did one layer of glazing.  If I do many layers of very thin glazes I bet there won't be any streaks.  Consider this a work in progress.
By the way. What should I title this painting? I called it the Admirer because little bird seems to adore the lady. But I'm open to ideas for other titles.

1097 Shabbat, Mile End, 8x10 oil on board

I really like the high contrast in this painting. It is very dynamic and there's a lot happening but it's also very simplified and the centre of interest is very clear.

1072 Outremont Park, 8x10 oil on board

sold-LaPrairie QC
I love love love ice skating! It's so much fun. It's like flying! I haven't been in 3 years. Last time I went skating I fell and knocked myself out. Spent Christmas night in the Emergency Ward. I've been too scared to skate since then. I'm starting to feel like hitting the ice again. From now on I'm wearing a helmet!

1070 Crescent Street, 8x10, oil on board

sold-Toronto
Everyone's going out to eat after a day of shopping. Food tastes infinitely better if you've had to climb over snow, drive around and around to find parking, and burned calories shivering in the cold. Brrrr

Well, spring is right around the corner.  Soon I'll be painting spring flowers. Happy Easter!

1013 McGill Ghetto, Best Friends, 8x10, oil on board

Sold-Havenhill NH USA

I saw this adorable pair and thought I've gotta paint that narrative. I couldn't decide whether they were moving in, or back from the holidays, or just heading to the library with a lot of those heavy textbooks in that roller bag. I finally decided they were best friends moving in.

994 Poppies in the Veggie Patch, 12x16, oil on canvas

Sold-Ontario
I did this yesterday in the garden. Someone gave me some poppy seeds and what a lovely varied assortment came up. We had a heat spell that lasted two months and the veggies just loved it. I just tossed another handful of poppy seeds into the bed. I want to be painting them into the fall. All the other flowers have gone but the bachelor buttons are coming back. and there are a few pink roses still.  I just love summer.
